Windber Medical Center
Receives Three National Planetree Awards
The Spirit of Planetree Awards were created to promote
patient-centered care by publicly recognizing individuals who
personalize and demystify the healthcare experience for others
as well as program and services that support extraordinary
achievement in patient-centered care.
Chris Spinos
WINDBER
MEDICAL CENTER
WINDBER, PA
“Chris is
Windber Medical Center’s Clinical Coordinator of Critical Care.
She consistently radiates joy and love toward her patients,
often under very difficult conditions, while simultaneously
reaching out to patient families to make sure their emotional
and physical needs are addressed. Her exemplary care has
endeared Chris to many hearts, as exemplified by this beautiful
story. A terminal CCU patient’s plans to marry his special lady
were delayed by his admission to the CCU. So Chris rallied her
staff and enthusiastically arranged a small wedding in the
patient’s room, complete with music, wedding cake, and food for
guests. The patient remained at Windber Medical Center for
another three weeks before he died. But he and his bride
couldn’t say enough about their deepest appreciation for the
compassion and care shown by Chris and her staff to make his
wish come true. Chris Spinos clearly mirrors the component of
Planetree reflecting the need for human beings to care for and
serve other human beings."
Rodolfo Furigay
WINDBER
MEDICAL CENTER
WINDBER, PA
“’To cure
sometimes, to heal often, and to care always…’ This is Dr.
Rodolfo Furigay’s personal philosophy, and it certainly echoes
the Planetree philosophy to provide an optimum healing
environment for the body, mind, and spirit. As Windber Medical
Center’s Chief of Surgery, Dr. Furigay strongly endorses patient
empowerment based on sharing with them the latest information on
both conventional and complementary medical options, taking the
time to present this information in a personalizing, humanizing,
and demystifying manner for both the patient and family. Dr.
Furigay also wraps his empowerment beliefs with deep compassion
for his patients’ spiritual needs, often praying with them and
always respectful of their dignity and the sanctity of life.
Each Year, Dr. Furigay transplants the Planetree philosophy to
the Philippines where he conducts medical and surgical missions
to the poor and indigent. Dr. Furigay is the quintessential
Physician Champion, demonstrating the sincerest commitment to
the Planetree components of nurturing human interaction, patient
empowerment, and a vibrant connection with family and
community.”
Complementary
Therapies
INSTITUTE
FOR INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE
WINDBER MEDICAL CENTER
WINDBER, PA
East is East
and West is West, and never the twain shall meet. Mark Twain’s
famous verse has long been disproved at Windber Medical Center’s
Institute for Integrative Medicine. In many facilities,
integration of traditional Western allotropic and Eastern
complementary medicine is contentious. However, considerable
time and resources have been focused on WMC staff and community
education to teach the value of perceiving both disciplines as
powerful tools to enhance health. As a result, the services
provided by the Institute for Integrative Medicine have been
almost seamlessly integrated into the care modalities provided
by our other more ‘conventional’ treatment modalities. Now, a
WMC physician may consider a differential diagnosis to identify
and treat the medical problem, but often will simultaneously
inquire about wider contexts of family, friends, stress, diet,
and how to find harmony. As more and more patients express their
interest in complementary therapies to their WMC physicians, our
physicians are increasingly comfortable with prescribing any
number of therapies, from Reiki, to massage, aromatherapy,
flower essences, acupuncture, and a regimen of meditation, yoga
and breathing techniques for stress management. And it’s not at
all unusual to find our physicians waiting in our Integrative
Medicine waiting room!

In the past 10 years, hospitals around the country have begun adopting the philosophy of patient-centered care. AARP's Modern Maturity named Windber Medical Center one of its 15 "Hospitals With Heart" as one of America's leading providers of this visionary health care philosophy in its July/August 2001 issue.
Modern Maturity consulted organizations devoted to fostering patient-centered care, and also interviewed dozens of caregivers, hospital administrators, and other distinguished experts. Windber Medical Center was among those facilities named as one of those most respected by their peers. |
